EYFS Introduction

In Reception class, we want children to feel happy and safe so that they can play, explore and learn. We enjoy getting to know each child and helping them to achieve their potential.
Teaching in the Reception class follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Learning and development is underpinned by the three characteristics of effective teaching and learning. These are; playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’; active learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements; and creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things. (Statutory Framework for the EYFS 2012).
There are seven areas of learning and development. The prime areas run through and support learning in all other areas; Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional development.
The specific areas are; Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
Within each area of learning there are Early Learning Goals. We recognise that every child progresses at a different rate and by observing and working with the children we are able to assess progress and plan for next steps in their learning, providing support or extra challenges.
