Areas of Learning in EYFS - General Expectations

Prime Areas of Learning

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • settle into school
  • share and take turns
  • engage enthusiastically in classroom learning activities

Physical Development

  • hold a pencil correctly in a tripod grip (using 3 fingers)
  • move in a variety of ways and can stop, start and change directions on a given signal
  • can use space safely with an awareness of others

Communication and Language

  • take turns in conversation
  • show good listening skills – to look at the person speaking, to listen to all of the words
  • respond appropriately to what they hear.

Specific Areas of Learning

Literacy

  • learn and practise letter sounds
  • learn and recognise instantly at least 25 key words
  • write their own names and form most letters correctly

Mathematics

  • recognise and begin to write numerals to at least 10
  • consistently count accurately to at least 10 / 20
  • describe and recognise 2D and 3D shapes

Understanding the World

  • be aware of the changing season and weather changes
  • ask questions and investigate what’s around them
  • know that everyone in different but still special

Expressive Arts and Design

  • recognise how sounds can be changed – using both voice and instruments
  • sing some familiar songs independently
  • experiment with paint and a range of other media
  • use their imagination in music, art, role play and construction

 

Home learning 

In Reception, the children receive weekly reading practise. We ask that all children read a minimum of three times a week with an adult. 

The children also receive log in details for the Numbots website, where they can explore different Maths games and activities. 

 

Enrichment 

Each half term the children take part in enrichment activities with the aim of bringing our learning to life. 

Autumn term

  • The children create and bring in their own 'Chatter Boxes' a shoebox filled with special things that tell us all about them that they can then present to the class. 
  • We go on a senses walk around the school to help us explore our senses and see what we can hear, see, feel, smell and taste. 
  • We also go on a seasons walk around the school to spot signs of Autumn and then again as we move into Winter. 
  • Diwali dancing workshop
  • Visit from Canon Chris

Spring term 

  • Hatching caterpillars 
  • Traditional tales dress up day 
  • Easter egg hunt
  • Making bread
  • Visit from Canon Chris

Summer term 

  • Looking after our class dinosaur egg
  • Brickies workshop

  • Pirate/under the sea dress up day
