Year 4

Year 4 Home Learning

Home learning in Year 4 is set weekly on Seesaw every Wednesday and is due the following Monday. Each week, tasks will alternate between Maths and English, alongside a foundation subject such as RE, Art, Geography/History, RSE and Citizenship, or Computing.

In addition to Seesaw tasks, children are expected to:

  • Practise Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for 10 minutes each week
  • Read daily for at least 10 minutes, with a minimum of 3 signatures recorded weekly in the reading record
  • Complete assigned SPAG.com grammar activities

Regular home learning helps reinforce classroom learning and builds independence and responsibility. Thank you for your continued support at home.

Year 4 Enrichment

Throughout the year, Year 4 pupils take part in a range of exciting enrichment experiences designed to enhance learning beyond the classroom and support personal development.

  • Autumn Term: Children enjoy an immersive Ancient Egyptian workshop, bringing their history learning to life through hands-on activities and artefacts.
  • Spring Term: Pupils attend the High Ashurst residential, developing independence, teamwork and resilience through outdoor learning and adventure activities.
  • Summer Term: Enrichment continues with engaging end-of-year experiences that support creativity, reflection and celebration of learning.

Across the year, all pupils also take part in Bikeability, helping them to develop confidence and essential road safety skills. In addition, Canon Chris visits every term, providing opportunities for reflection, discussion and spiritual development.

These enrichment activities play a key role in making learning memorable and meaningful for our Year 4 children.

Year 4 Times Table check:

The Multiplication Table Check (MTC) is a Key Stage 2 online assessment which is taken by children at the end of Year Four, in June. Children will be asked to answer 25 questions, which will be on times tables from two to twelve. They are given six seconds to answer each question, with a three second rest between each question. The test lasts less than five minutes and will be taken on iPads in school.

The purpose of this test is to ensure that times table knowledge is at the expected level, so children are prepared to go into Upper Key Stage 2. Children should be fluent in their times tables from two to twelve. This check allows the school to see where there are gaps in times table knowledge and put the appropriate interventions in place.

Residential

The children attend a residential in Year Four, which is for two nights. The residential is located in Surrey, at High Ashurst. Here the children develop their team-building skills, their communication, their independence and their love of the outdoors.

Throughout their stay, they take part in activities such as high ropes, rock climbing, fire starting and den building, amongst others. They also go on a night walk through the grounds and roast marshmallows on the campfire.

The children are split into separate cabins and are encouraged to make their own beds, keep their rooms tidy and keep themselves generally organised.

For some, the residential is their first time away from home, staying with friends. It is a great way to build their confidence and create some wonderful memories along the way!
